Did Dante use his literary gifts responsibly?

Although The Inferno was definitely not my favorite read and he has serious doctrinal errors, Dante is assuredly an awe-inspiring writer. Not only did he have a talent for effectively using literary techniques, he was well learned in history and classic literature, as well as the events and people that were in his time. I think that Dante certainly used his literary gift responsibly. Through The Inferno and the whole Divine Comedy he is able to illustrate the unconceivable journey of a man from Hell to Heaven. In doing this, his classic work is still powerful these nearly seven centuries later. It is continuously consumed by those who choose to embark on this thought-provoking journey, in which the extents of mankind are explored or rather witnessed. Dante uses his gift to leave a lasting impression of literary merit.
